Eisenhower Health Center – Del Webb – North Palm Desert Primary Care

Location: Multiple sites - Coachella Valley, CA

Overview

Eisenhower has been a leader in health care for the Coachella Valley since they opened their medical center in 1971. Since then, they have been growing steadily, adding services, capabilities and facilities to anticipate and meet the needs of the expanding area.

With primary care, urgent care centers, multi-specialty health centers, and specialized programs across the valley, they offer comprehensive health care support, from education and prevention to diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation.

With the ever-expanding footprint throughout the region of offsite Eisenhower medical and primary care centers, the primary care unit team sought out the expertise of an efficient solution to speed up the delivery of these new strategically placed sites. The goal on these projects was speed. The quicker the main campus hospital could re-direct certain lower tier or check-up patients to an offsite more convenient and accessible location the sooner the main campus hospital could free up resources for emergencies and specialized surgeries.

The Task

The task of speeding up the delivery of healthcare projects is often requested but rarely executed properly. There are many factors that play into these types of projects from the city jurisdictions and entitlements to health compliance. Tasked with the city zoning entitlements, architectural and
engineering design, permitting and taking the project through the construction build-out and certificate of occupancy, we went to work.

Our Approach

With the goal established and scope of work defined, we, alongside Ownership went into the planning phase. The hospital main campus is no stranger to the city and city officials however the offsite premises are often categorized differently. Our team of engineers and planners always start with city plan checker and city inspector meetings to better understand their process and requirements. This is often times one of our first meetings once the project and it’s parameters are defined. The construction of these sites often required careful planning as the sites were often shared with other medical related facilities and utilized during daytime hours and on the weekends, think Urgent Care. These restrictions were carefully thought about and scheduled thinking about any construction tasks that may be noisy and how to fit them into non-working hours or night time work.

The Outcome

Prioritizing planning and understanding the owner’s objectives is key to crafting a successful
project outcome. With engineers, designers and the crews working day and night, we completed multiple sites and delivered the desired outcome we were engaged to do so. The confidence in SCGWest allowed the owners the flexibility to work on acquiring future sites and focus on
other tasks while trusting the work to be completed timely and cost efficiently. As a result of our engagement, the primary care team realized time efficiencies of near 16% comparing prior similar projects.
